Before there was an Administrative Professionals Day, there was a National Secretaries Day, created in 1952. We’ve come a long way since then, and so have the job and celebration. This day of recognition has gone through several makeovers to reflect changing administrative titles and responsibilities in the modern Canadian workforce. While its moniker has changed, the purpose of Administrative Professionals Day remains the same: to celebrate and shed light on the many contributions of these devoted and valued administrative professionals. The hybrid workplace in 2025, a mix of remote and in-office teams, feels and recognizes the efforts of support staff more than ever. Between the workplace transformation that took place post-pandemic and the mix of hybrid and return to office policies which have been implemented since, administrative professionals across Canada have been instrumental to their teams by tackling new challenges and managing emotions under pressure while helping employees stay connected, engaged and productive. Sound like someone you know? Are there team members you’d like to honour this Administrative Professionals Day? Even for remote employees, there are ways to celebrate administrative professionals you regularly work with. The International Association of Administrative Professionals, one of the original sponsors of Administrative Professionals Day, offers a listing of events to celebrate your support team in 2025. Every year, this day of recognition falls on the Wednesday of the last full week of April.

When is Administrative Professionals Day?

Mark these dates on your calendar: 2025: April 23  2026: April 22 2027: April 28 In some companies, Administrative Professionals Day is incorporated into a larger celebration known as Administrative Professionals Week, with the last full week of April devoted to celebrating the organization’s invaluable administrative and customer support staff. Considering the amount of work they do, it’s no wonder that Canadian managers and employees alike feel these colleagues merit so much recognition. Administrative roles are incredibly diverse — and they continue to evolve, with these professionals often going above and beyond their regular duties. Hiring for administrative or customer support roles? We can help. Canada’s administrative professionals provide real benefit to the people they support and the organization at large. Their work should not go unnoticed. And given the important role many administrative staff play in assisting their teams in today’s rapidly changing business environment, they deserve their time in the spotlight more than ever.

Sharing appreciation on Administrative Professionals Day – in 2025 and beyond

If you’re looking for ways to honour your workforce on Administrative Professionals Day, going the traditional route and sending a gift card is still a solid choice – close to half (46 per cent) of Canadian professionals cite small tokens of appreciation such as gift cards as one of their favourite methods of recognition. Effective recognition efforts can also make a big difference in employee retention – a Robert Half survey of 1,500 Canadian workers found that 73 per cent agree that receiving recognition for their contributions influences their decision to stay with their employers. If you’re searching for a more unique way to show appreciation, especially in a hybrid environment, try one of these ideas: A kind word — A thank-you can go a long way, but don’t leave it at that. Let your administrative team know how their work has helped you or the department. Share praise from happy clients, celebrate achievements and recognize your workers publicly, a method of recognition favoured by nearly one third (32 per cent) of Canadian professionals. An even nicer touch is a verbal commendation followed by a thank-you card or e-card. Administrative professionals can keep these accolades, reminding them of how much they are appreciated.  Rest and relaxation — Administrative professionals work hard, and it can be difficult to find personal time to unwind. Time off is tied with gift cards as the top recognition method among 46 per cent of Canadian professionals. If policies allow, give your workers the flexibility to log off early and recharge. New opportunities — Show your administrative team members that you’re invested in their future by offering new professional challenges and opportunities. If they are interested, ask them to oversee a project or encourage them to consider joining a mentorship program. A gesture like this will show that you value a team member’s contributions and career growth and have confidence in their skills and abilities.  Professional development — Offer reimbursement for professional organization memberships or online courses. Administrative professionals are eager to learn and expand their skills, and they need to stay abreast of the latest technologies and best practices in their field. When you encourage employees to grow in their careers, the result benefits the entire organization.  Whatever your methods, your hardworking administration team will likely appreciate any act of gratitude, no matter how big or small. Even if you’re working with a limited budget, you can make Administrative Professional’s Day in 2025 resonate! Hiring for your next great executive assistant or administrative assistant? Let us help!
